Microbial chlorate (ClO3 ) and perchlorate (ClO4 ) reduction has recently been recognized as an important form of microbial metabolism for the removal of chlorine oxyanion contamination in the environment. Chlorine oxyanions have many industrial applications including use as bleaching agents by the paper and pulp industry, as disinfectants and defoliants by the agricultural industry, and as components of explosives and rocket propellants by the aerospace and defense industries.
