In 98 patients with histologically proved pancreatic islet cell carcinoma who were studied between 1950 and 1987, 55 had functioning tumors and 43 had nonfunctioning tumors. Both patient groups were compared in regard to age at presentation, metastases, and survival. Mean age at diagnosis was 51.1 years for the 55 men and 47 years for the 43 women.
