  • In the lands that were transferred to the VOC by the Treaty of Bungaya in 1667, the legitimacy of the local rulers collapsed almost completely. They were forced to pay tribute and homage to the VOC governor in Ujung Pandang, who had final say over who would succeed them in office. This was a role once played by the sultan of Gowa.
