It has traditionally been assumed that the influence of Islam on Western jurisprudence was far less than on natural sciences, philosophy and even theology. Since the Middle Ages, the development of a jurisprudence increasingly emancipated from theology, and the separate development of the two learned laws (Roman law and Canon law) have been among those characteristics of occidental society which clearly delimit it from the Islamic World.
