The chameleon mechanism is a way to give an effective mass to a light scalar field via field self-interaction and interaction with matter. We study this mechanism in models in which the couplings are field dependent and find that the properties are very different from the case of constant couplings. The consequences of a runaway potential for the radion field in brane world scenarios and whether the radion can play the role of dark energy is investigated. The cosmological evolution during the…

Towards a UV completion of chameleons in string theory

Chameleons are scalar fields that couple directly to ordinary matter with gravitational strength, but which nevertheless evade the stringent constraints on tests of gravity because of properties they

Dilaton stabilization and composite dark matter in the string frame of heterotic-M-theory

In this paper we further elaborate on our recently proposed solution to the cosmological constant problem - Phys. Rev. D82 (2010) 044006. One of the elements of the solution is the chameleonic

The cosmological constant problem in heterotic-M-theory and the orbifold of time

Chameleon fields are quantum fields with an increasing mass as a function of the matter density of the environment. Recently chameleon fields have been exploited to solve the cosmological constant

Cosmological perturbations during radion stabilization

We consider the evolution of cosmological perturbations during radion stabilization, which we assume to happen after a period of inflation in the early universe. Concentrating on the Randall-Sundrum

Towards a UV Completion for Chameleon Scalar Theories

Chameleons are scalar fields that couple directly to ordinary matter with gravitational strength, but which nevertheless evade the stringent constraints on tests of gravity because of properties they

Quantum mechanics before the big bang in heterotic-M-theory

In this letter we investigate the role played by quantum mechanics before the big-bang in heterotic-M-theory assuming an orbifold compactification of time. As we will see particles are localized

Neutrino dark energy and moduli stabilization in a BPS braneworld scenario

A braneworld model for neutrino dark energy (DE) is presented. We consider a five-dimensional two-branes setup with a bulk scalar field motivated by supergravity. Its low-energy effective theory is

Tests of chameleon gravity

The present state-of-the-art searches for screened scalars coupled to matter are summarized, and the current bounds on f(R) models that exhibit the chameleon mechanism are translated into a single parametrization to survey the state of the models.

Interacting Dark Matter and Dark Energy

We discuss models for the cosmological dark sector in which the energy density of a scalar field approximates Einstein's cosmological constant and the scalar field value determines the dark matter

It is argued that a number of models in which the energy density of the scalar field red-shifts in a specific manner are studied could reconcile the low dynamical estimates of the mean mass density with the negligibly small spatial curvature preferred by inflation.

A Large mass hierarchy from a small extra dimension

We propose a new higher-dimensional mechanism for solving the hierarchy problem. The weak scale is generated from the Planck scale through an exponential hierarchy. However, this exponential arises

Gauge coupling variation in brane models

We consider the space-time variation of gauge couplings in brane-world models induced by the coupling to a bulk scalar field. A variation is generated by the running of the gauge couplings with

Cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropies in brane worlds.

We propose a new formulation to calculate the cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectrum in the Randall-Sundrum two-brane model based on recent progress in solving the bulk geometry using a low

The Cosmon model for an asymptotically vanishing time dependent cosmological 'constant'

We investigate the coupled system of gravity and a scalar with exponential potential. The energy momentum tensor of the scalar field induces a time-dependent cosmological “constant”. This adjusts

Cosmology and brane worlds: a review

Cosmological consequences of the brane world scenario are reviewed in a pedagogical manner. According to the brane world idea, the standard model particles are confined on a hypersurface (a so-called

CMB Anisotropies in the Presence of Extra Dimensions

We discuss the effect of the time evolution of extra dimensions on CMB anisotropies and large-scale structure formation. We study the impact of scalar fields in a low-energy effective description of

Quintessence as a runaway dilaton

We consider a late-time cosmological model based on a recent proposal that the infinite-bare-coupling limit of superstring/M-theory exists and has good phenomenological properties, including a
