There is still considerable scepticism regarding the ability of pharmaceutical drugs to modify the disease processes of osteoarthritis. However, findings from recent studies with pentosan polysulfate [Cartrophen®; Ivax/Arthropharm] appear to suggest that such reparative activity may be possible. The results of a number of animal and clinical trials recently conducted with this agent were presented at the 8th Asia-Pacific League Against Rheumatism Congress [Melbourne, Australia; April 1996].
