We investigated whether simultaneous bilateral sequential total hip replacement (THR) would increase the rate of mortality and complications compared with unilateral THR in both low- and high-risk groups of patients. We enrolled 978 patients with bilateral and 1666 with unilateral THR in the study. There were no significant pre-operative differences between the groups in regard to age, gender, body mass index, diagnosis, comorbidity as assessed by the grading of the American Society of…
One-Stage Bilateral Total Hip Replacement is Cost-Saving
TLDR
The results indicate that the one-stage procedure is cost-saving compared to two-stage procedures for patients with indication for bilateral THR, and comparing one- and two-staged procedures showed a 24% reduction in hospital and sick-leave costs.
Single-Anesthetic Versus Staged Bilateral Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Matched Cohort Study
TLDR
In this matched cohort analysis, single-anesthetic bilateral THA was not associated with an increased risk of revision, reoperation, or postoperative complications, while decreasing cost.
Comparison of Simultaneous Bilateral Cementless Total Hip Replacement with Staged Bilateral Cementless Total Hip Replacement in High Risk Anesthesia Group
TLDR
It is considered safe to perform simultaneous cementless bilateral THA in patients with high anesthetic risk, if meticulous preoperative evaluation is done.
Sequential Bilateral Total Hip Arthroplasty Through a Minimally Invasive Anterior Approach is Safe to Perform
TLDR
A retrospective analysis of patients undergoing sequential bilateral total hip arthroplasty performed using anterior minimally invasive surgery suggests that, in selected patients, sequential bilateral THA via an anterior minimality invasive approach appears to be a valid alternative to two-stage bilateral THa.
Simultaneous bilateral versus unilateral total ankle replacement: a patient-based comparison of pain relief, quality of life and functional outcome.
TLDR
After four months, patients with simultaneous bilateral TAR reported a significantly higher mean pain score than those with a unilateral TAR, but this difference disappeared at the one-and two-year follow-ups.

A comparison of the cost effectiveness of one-stage versus two-stage bilateral total hip replacement.
TLDR
Analysis of the total hospital charges submitted to the insurance companies was made between the groups and there was no difference between the two groups in the operative time, estimated blood loss, or perioperative complications.
Bilateral total hip arthroplasty: a single procedure.
TLDR
Replacement of both hips under one anesthetic benefits patients in that the postoperatively complications are the same as for the procedure for one hip; the length of hospitalization and convalescence are only slightly longer; the postoperative follow-up shows no differences except for a slight restriction in range of motion for the bilateral group; and the cost represents a 30% savings over that of a unilateral hip performed twice.
Perioperative Morbidity after Single-stage Bilateral Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Matched Control Study
TLDR
Bilateral single-stage total hip arthroplasties have an acceptable perioperative risk for patients with ASA Class 1 or 2 physical status and the ASA classification was the only independent predictor for minor complications, major complications, and fat emboli syndrome.
One- or two-stage bilateral total hip arthroplasty: a prospective, randomised, controlled study in an Asian population.
TLDR
The safety and outcome of one-stage bilateral total hip arthroplasty with those of a two-stage procedure during different admissions in a prospective, randomised controlled trial in an Asian population of inflammatory arthritis is compared.
Single-stage bilateral total hip arthroplasty.
TLDR
The primary postoperative concern is that the cardiopulmonary insult associated with two surgical wounds and surgeries can lead to an increase in thromboembolic events.
Bilateral Total Hip Arthroplasty: One Stage Versus Two Stage Procedure
TLDR
Preoperatively, very stiff hips gained significantly more motion in the 1 stage group than in the 2 stage groups, whereas hips with better preoperative motion improved the most in Group B, without a significant difference occurring between Groups A and C.
Bilateral total hip-replacement arthroplasty in one stage.
TLDR
The total length of stay in the hospital was reduced by about one-half in comparison with single-admission two-stage replacements and the incidence of local and systemic complications was similar for all three groups, as were the clinical and roentgenographic results.
