SUMMARY Cystic echinococcosis (CE) remains an important health problem in many areas of the world, including the Mediterranean region. We performed a retrospective study of cases reported from 1998 to 2012 in order to review and update the epidemiology of this disease in a highly endemic area situated in western Spain. A total of 471 patients were diagnosed with hydatid disease. Of these cases, 55·8% were male, with an average age of 62·3 ± 19·5 years. More importantly, 1·5% of patients were…
Surveillance of Human Echinococcosis in Castilla-Leon (Spain) between 2000-2012
TLDR
The systematic search of Hospital Discharge Records of the National Health System Register (HDR) may be a more accurate method than other methods for the estimation of the incidence of CE in endemic areas.
Imported cystic echinococcosis in western Spain: a retrospective study.
TLDR
The epidemiological and clinical characteristics of CE in immigrants are different than those of the native population, and their influence on CE burden in this endemic area is still limited.
Cystic Echinococcosis in the Mediterranean
TLDR
Reliable data on CE remains fragmented and insufficient to gauge the magnitude of the problem beyond local communities, and the lack of major advances leaves clinicians without an evidence base on which to make sound clinical decisions.
Retrospective study of human cystic echinococcosis over the past decade in France, using a nationwide hospital medical information database
TLDR
The fact that in France, cystic echinococcosis is not re-emerging and that the incidence remains low in comparison with similar studies in other Mediterranean countries is stressed.
Epidemiological distribution of Echinococcus granulosus s.l. infection in human and domestic animal hosts in European Mediterranean and Balkan countries: A systematic review
TLDR
Italy, Spain, and Eastern Europe are confirmed as the most affected areas, but data are extremely heterogeneous, geographical coverage very patchy, and human prevalence studies extremely scant, and the notorious problem of underreporting of E. granulosus s.l. infection is highlighted.
Characterisation of Antigen B Protein Species Present in the Hydatid Cyst Fluid of Echinococcus canadensis G7 Genotype
TLDR
Analysis of protein and lipid composition of AgB obtained from fertile HF of swine origin endorses genomic data supporting that AgB2 behaves as a pseudogene in G7 genotype, and indicates that its use as antigen in immunoassays could contribute to false negative results in areas where E. canadensis circulates.
Prevalence and Molecular Genotyping of Echinococcus granulosus With Emphasis on Their Infectivity to Some Domestic Animals in Central and Southern Sudan

Helmintosis y eosinofilia en España (1990-2015)
TLDR
A systematic review of cases and case series on helminth infections and eosinophilia reported in Spain from 1990 to 2015 is carried out, making a distinction between autochthonous and imported (immigrants and travelers) cases, and studying their relationship with immunodepression situations.

Cystic Echinococcosis in Spain: Current Situation and Relevance for Other Endemic Areas in Europe
TLDR
It is believed that the introduction of national registries for CE with online data entry, following the example set by the European Registry for Alveolar Echinococcosis, would help streamline data collection on CE by eliminating the need for evaluating and integrating data from multiple regions, by avoiding duplication of data from patients who access several different health facilities over time.
Study of Hydatidosis-Attributed Mortality in Endemic Area
TLDR
The main causes of mortality in patients with hydatidosis are complications related to the rupture of CE cysts with supurative collangitis, and an expectant management can be dangerous and it must be only employed in well-selected patients.
Worldwide epidemiology of liver hydatidosis including the Mediterranean area.
TLDR
The purpose of this review is to examine the distribution of E. granulosus and the epidemiology of a re-emerging disease such as cystic echinococcosis, currently considered an endemic zoonotic disease in the Mediterranean region.
European Echinococcosis Registry: Human Alveolar Echinococcosis, Europe, 1982–2000
TLDR
The increasing prevalence of Echinococcus multilocularis in foxes in rural and urban areas of central Europe and the occurrence of cases outside the alveolar echinococcosis–endemic regions suggest that this disease deserves increased attention.
Cystic Echinococcoses in Mongolia: Molecular Identification, Serology and Risk Factors
TLDR
The main species/strains in the study population were E. canadenis and E. granulossus s.s. with E.Canadensis the predominant species identified in children.
Cystic echinococcosis in sub-Saharan Africa.
Cystic Echinococcosis in the Province of Álava, North Spain: The Monetary Burden of a Disease No Longer under Surveillance
TLDR
The data provide evidence that CE is still very well present in Álava and incurs important cost to the province every year, and it seems advisable to reinstate appropriate surveillance and monitoring systems and to implement effective control measures that avoid the spread and recrudescence of the disease.
Risk factors for Echinococcus granulosus infection: a case-control study.
TLDR
Risk factors for hydatidosis traceable to the family environment are of greater relative importance than those attributable to working directly with livestock and no association could be found between ingestion of raw green vegetables and hyd atidosis.
Control of cystic echinococcosis/hydatidosis: 1863-2002.
[Hydatidosis in the province of Salamanca (Spain): should we let down our guard?].
TLDR
The real incidence of this disease seems to be higher than previously estimated, twice as many as previously reported by the notifiable diseases scheme and the several cases of paediatric hydatid disease detected within the last two years of this study suggest a possible re-emergence of hyd atid disease.
