Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-82), American -writer, philosopher and poet, suggested that a 'weed' is simply "[a] plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered" (Harlan & de Wet 1965, p.18). One hundred and twenty three years after his death the search for an all encompassing defmition of the term continues.
