This paper explores how the interaction between household heterogeneity and progressive government transfers shapes aggregate labor market â€iuctuations. Using a static model of the extensive margin labor supply, we analytically show that greater progressivity in the transfer system leads to greater volatility of low wage workers’ employment and less procyclical average labor productivity. We then build a dynamic general equilibrium model with both idiosyncratic and aggregate productivity…

Applying the Explicit Aggregation Algorithm to Heterogeneous Macro Models

This paper applies the explicit aggregation (Xpa) algorithm developed by den Haan and Rendahl (J Econ Dyn Control 34:69–78, 2010) to the heterogeneous-firm models of Khan and Thomas (J Monet Econ

Individual and Aggregate Labor Supply in Heterogeneous Agent Economies with Intensive and Extensive Margins

We develop a heterogeneous-agent general equilibrium model that incorporates both intensive and extensive margins of labor supply. A nonconvexity in the mapping between time devoted to work and labor

Inequality , Portfolio Choice and the Business Cycle

I study the effect of heterogeneity, in both the level and composition of wealth, in a dynamic stochastic overlapping-generations economy where households face uninsurable unemployment, earnings, and

Reconciling Micro and Macro Labor Supply Elasticities: A Structural Perspective

The response of aggregate labor supply to various changes in the economic environment is central to many economic issues, including the optimal design of tax policies. Whereas the earlier literature

Heterogeneity and Aggregation: Implications for Labor-Market Fluctuations

We demonstrate that aggregate employment and consumption can increase without a corresponding movement in productivity in a model with heterogeneous agents where the only aggregate disturbance is a

Macroeconomics and Household Heterogeneity

Towards a Micro-Founded Theory of Aggregate Labour Supply

We build a heterogeneous agents life cycle model that captures a large number of salient features of individual male labour supply over the life cycle, by education, both along the intensive and

Fiscal Policy with Heterogeneous Agents and Incomplete Markets

I undertake a quantitative investigation into the short run effects of changes in the timing of taxes for a model economy in which heterogeneous households trade only one asset and face a borrowing

Heterogeneity and Aggregation: Implications for Labor-Market Fluctuations: Comment

Chang and Kim (2007) develop an incomplete asset markets model incorporating discrete labor supply and idiosyncratic labor productivity. Their results resolve long-standing puzzles for business cycle
