This paper comprises a review of the current status of knowledge concerning the elementary reactions of charged species in flames. A description is given of the nature and origins of ions in hydrocarbon flames, cyanogen flames, and combustion systems containing a variety of additives. Some presently outstanding areas of uncertainty and gaps in the existing body of information are identified and experiments to obtain missing data or to resolve discrepancies in interpretation are suggested.
