Ionized calcium (Ca(+2)) appears to be required by the 3 predominant species of rumen cellulolytic bacteria, Fibrobacter succinogenes, Ruminococcus flavefaciens, and Ruminococcus albus. The present study evaluated the role of ionized calcium in growth and cellulose digestion. Maximum growth or rate and extent of digestion and lag time were the criteria used to evaluate Ca(+2) requirements. All cultures except F. succinogenes A3c grew when repeatedly transferred in a medium without added Ca(+2… Expand
Magnesium requirement of some of the principal rumen cellulolytic bacteria.
TLDR
Both strains of R. flavefaciens were found to have an absolute Mg requirement for cellulose degradation, and it seems unlikely that an in vivo deficiency of this element would occur. Expand
Enhancement the Cellulase Activity Induced by Endophytic Bacteria Using Calcium Nanoparticles
TLDR
The bacterial isolates showed potential convert of cellulose into reducing sugars which could be used in several applications and showed an obvious activity toward cellulase enzyme production. Expand

Effect of soluble carbohydrates on digestion of cellulose by pure cultures of rumen bacteria
TLDR
Prolonged exposure of the bacteria to a low pH had little if any effect on their subsequent ability to digest cellulose, and cellulase activity of intact bacterial cells appeared to be constitutive in nature for these three species of rumen bacteria. Expand
Vitamin Requirements of Several Cellulolytic Rumen Bacteria
TLDR
Four strains of cellulolytic bacteria recently isolated from in vitro rumen fermentations were used in this study and a mixture of purified amino acids simulating casein hydrolysate satisfied the vitamin requirements for R. flavefaciens Cla. Expand
Effects of Physicochemical Factors on the Adhesion to Cellulose Avicel of the Ruminal Bacteria Ruminococcus flavefaciens and Fibrobacter succinogenes subsp. succinogenes
TLDR
Adhesion of F. succinogenes seems to be related to the metabolic functions of the cell, and several mechanisms are probably involved in the adhesion, the main one being the interaction between the large glycocalyx and the divalent cations Ca and Mg. Expand
Observations on the Nutrition of Bacteroides Succinogenes—A Ruminal Cellulolytic Bacterium
TLDR
The results indicate the relatively great ability of B. succinogenes to synthesize cellular constituents and, also, how well this bacterium is adapted to the environment of the rumen. Expand
A Study of Actively Cellulolytic Rod-Shaped Bacteria of the Bovine Rumen
TLDR
It was concluded that all strains belonged to one species, Bacteriodes succinogeues Hungate, and suggested that rmnen fluid contains an unknown heat, acid, and alkali-stable factor that is not a common B vitamin, amino acid, peptide, purine, pyrimidinc, or mineral. Expand
Sodium and Other Inorganic Growth Requirements of Bacteroides amylophilus
TLDR
The results suggest that Na(+) may be a more frequent requirement among terrestial bacteria obtained from relatively low-salt environments than has been previously believed. Expand
Phenylacetic acid stimulation of cellulose digestion by Ruminococcus albus 8
TLDR
The results indicate that cellulose digestion by strain 8 was probably limited by phenylalanine biosynthesis in the authors' previously reported medium, and illustrate the potential usefulness of this method in formulating defined media to simulate those in nature. Expand
CHARACTERISTICS OF RUMINAL ANAEROBIC CELLULOLYTIC COCCI AND CILLOBACTERIUM CELLULOSOLVENS N. SP
TLDR
Subsequent to the first work reported by Hungate, many workers using similar cultural techniques have found anaerobic cocci among the more numerous cellulolytic bacteria in the rumen. Expand
Inorganic and Metal-Organic Growth Requirements of the Genus Bacteroides
TLDR
The inorganic and metal-organic growth requirements of Bacteroides species appear useful as aids in species differentiation and are influenced by other divalent cations. Expand
Invited review: adhesion mechanisms of rumen cellulolytic bacteria.
TLDR
No direct evidence, except scanning electron microscopy observations, yet supports the existence of either cellulosome complex or fimbriae structures involved in the adhesion mechanism of F. succinogenes or R. flavefaciens to cellulose. Expand
