1. Membrane currents from the bursting pace-maker neurone R-15 of Aplysia were measured under conditions designed to simulate membrane oscillations. Changes in the absorbance of the Ca(2+)-sensitive dye arsenazo III were used to monitor changes in the free intracellular Ca(2+) concentration, [Ca](i), under these conditions.
