Escherichia coli K-12 grown in iron-deficient media contained a large amount of outer membrane proteins O-2a, O-2b, and O-3, while cells grown in iron-supplemented media contained far smaller amounts of these proteins. The iron uptake by the iron-deficient cells was significantly stimulated in the presence of enterochelin, while that by the iron-rich cells was not.
