6 SUMMARY Background: FS-1 is a complex of iodine and synthesized polysaccharides and it is very effective against a number of microbe and virus strains. The aim of the study was to evaluate possible genotoxic properties of FS-1. Methods: The compound was studied in rat and mouse bone marrow micronucleus (MN) assay and the comet assay in murine peripheral blood leukocytes, hepatocytes, and kidney cells. Two treatment protocols were applied, namely acute and subacute ones. In the first protocol…

Genotoxic activity of the new pharmaceutical FS-1 in Salmonella/microsome test and mouse lymphoma L5178Y cells.
The drug is not genotoxic, which is advantageous because many antibacterial/antiviral drugs possess such activity, and in both test-systems in all experiments completely negative results were obtained.

Investigations of genotoxic activity of antimicrobial/antiviral agent FS-1 in human lymphocytes and tumor cell
FS-1 can be further studied for its safety to humans for potential application in clinical medicine as an antimicrobial/antiviral drug.
Toxic and genotoxic effects of oral administration of furan in mouse liver.
The results obtained suggest that the contribution of genotoxicity to the mechanism of furan carcinogenicity in mouse liver should not be dismissed.
DNA damage and repair after exposure to sevoflurane in vivo, evaluated in Swiss albino mice by the alkaline comet assay and micronucleus test
The relationship between DNA damage and repair of peripheral blood leukocytes, liver, kidney and brain cells was investigated in Swiss albino mice after exposure to sevoflurane and number of micronuclei in reticulocytes showed a statistically significant increase.

Systemic application of ILalphaD proved to be successful in the rat infection model by promoting host defence and Probable mechanisms are increased intracellular killing of bacteria by production of hypoiodous acid and iodamines as well as anti-inflammatory activity.
Assessment of somatogenotoxicity of povidone-iodine using two in vitro assays.

Combining the in vivo comet and micronucleus assays: a practical approach to genotoxicity testing and data interpretation
Developed from over 15 years experience using the in vivo comet and MN assays in genotoxicity testing of chemicals and pharmaceuticals, this paper presents guidelines for the appropriate experimental design, dose selection and data interpretation for combined in vivo Comet/MN assay studies.
Principles and practices of integrating genotoxicity evaluation into routine toxicology studies: A pharmaceutical industry perspective
An integrated in vivo genotoxicity testing philosophy and a practical approach, as applied to pharmaceuticals, are described, suggesting that integrating micronucleus assessment in routine toxicology testing is promising and should be utilized when practical.
