A qualitative description is given of the basic processes which occur in the initial stages of intense discharges; this description is based on a comparison of voltage and current oscillograms with photographs of intense pulsed discharges in deuterium and certain inert gases. The experimental data are found to be in basic agreement with the work of M. A. Leontovich and S. M. Osovets on the “inertla” theory of plasma compression.
