Despite extensive research during the last few decades, the etiology of schizophrenia remains unclear. Evidence of both genetic and environmental influences in the developmental profile of schizophrenia has grown, and due to the complexity of this disorder, a polygenic aspect has been associated with this neuropsychiatric pathology. Unfortunately, no diagnostic strategies based on biological measurement or genetic testing is currently available for schizophrenia. Gene-expression profiling and…

Genes in immune pathways associated with abnormal white matter integrity in first-episode and treatment-naïve patients with schizophrenia

The pathogenesis of schizophrenia may be substantially influenced by genes involved in the immune system, via both pathway and network, and this gene-set analysis revealed that the yellow module was enriched with highly co-expressed, innate immune response genes.

Dysfunction of the Ubiquitin Proteasome and Ubiquitin-Like Systems in Schizophrenia

The results suggest a novel approach to the understanding of schizophrenia pathophysiology, where a disruption in homeostatic adaptation of the cell underlies discreet changes seen at the protein level in this illness.

Gene Expression Profiling Reveals Alterations of Specific Metabolic Pathways in Schizophrenia

Molecular analyses implicate a highly specific pattern of metabolic alterations in the PFC of subjects with schizophrenia and raise the possibility that antipsychotic medications may exert a therapeutic effect, in part, by normalizing some of these changes.

Microarray analysis of postmortem temporal cortex from patients with schizophrenia

Findings support the hypothesis that schizophrenia is associated with abnormalities in oligodendroglia and provide initial evidence suggesting a role for epigenetic mechanisms and altered circadian rhythms in this disorder.

Preliminary evidence of UPS dysregulation in BPD and psychosis is provided as well as support further investigation of the UPS and other molecular and cellular pathways for potential biomarkers for SCZ, BPD, and/or psychosis.

Is Ankyrin a genetic risk factor for psychiatric phenotypes?

A specific genetic contribution of ANK3 to bipolar disorder is supported though it is not confirmed as a common risk factor for different diseases, and findings for schizophrenia are failed to replicate.

Association study of 21 circadian genes with bipolar I disorder, schizoaffective disorder, and schizophrenia.

Several suggestive, novel associations were detected with circadian genes and BPI and SZ/SZA, but the present analyses do not support associations with common polymorphisms that confer risk with odds ratios greater than 1.5.
