This work investigates the molecular mode of cytokinin action, based on the cytokinin-dependent accumulation of the red pigment amaranthin in etiolated and derooted seedlings of Amaranthus caudatus. We established a rapid 8 h test that permitted a quantitative and kinetic analysis of early cytokinin effects. Studies on the inhibitory effects of actinomycin D, α-amanitin and cycloheximide indicated that rapid transcript induction and their translation were needed for amaranthin formation.
