Technical and professional communication (TPC) and user experience (UX) design are often seen as intertwined due to being user-centered. Yet, as widening industry positions combine TPC and UX, new streams enrich our understanding. This article looks at three such streams, namely, design thinking, content strategy, and artificial intelligence to uncover specific industry practices, skills, and ways to advocate for users. These streams foster a multistage user-centered methodology focused on a…

Extended Abstract: Making Design Thinking Genre Knowledge: Embodiment, Typification, and Engineering Design
TLDR
The authors articulate the design process as a kind of embodied genre composed of bodily actions and orientations to tools, texts, and environments in TPC classroom’s and beyond.
Introduction to Special Issue: Design-Thinking Approaches in Technical and Professional Communication
Technical and professional communication (TPC) as a discipline has long been concerned with the process of communication in context and the deep connection between rhetoric, writing, and
Design Thinking in Technical and Professional Communication: Four Perspectives
In this special issue, we explore design thinking as a broad conceptual process as well as a tool that might align with the work of technical and professional communication (TPC) programs. But what

TLDR
The article highlights the intertwined nature of technical communication, design thinking, and user experience (UX), and points to a noticeable gap in using design thinking and UX concepts in technical communication courses.
Design Thinking
TLDR
A look at papers published in MIS Quarterly and other major IS journals reveals important commonalities in the practice of design science research but also reveals important differences.
Understanding the behaviour of design thinking in complex environments
TLDR
This research will explore the behavior of design thinking as it tackles complex problems and examine how design thinking shapes, and is being shaped by, complex environments.

Are personas really usable?
TLDR
As IBM sought to begin creating teams of software engineers, project managers, marketers, technical communicators and others to work on new products, they found that communicating techniques and approaches between consultants from other specialty areas was a serious problem, creating a veritable Tower of Babel.
Designing for global mobile: considering user experience mapping with infrastructure, global openness, local user contexts and local cultural beliefs of technology use
TLDR
This article proposes extending experience mapping by considering the factors of existing infrastructures, global openness to innovation, local user contexts, and local beliefs on the function of technology so that designers of communication can better conceptualize sequences of events of interactions across cultures.
