There is accumulating evidence that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of depression. Decreased serum levels have been reported in major depression, and a correlation between BDNF reduction and the severity of the disease was found. Moreover, in post-mortem hippocampal tissue, increased levels of BDNF immunoreactivity have been reported in subjects treated with antidepressants compared to untreated subjects. These findings indicate parallel…

Differential regulation of neurotrophin S100B and BDNF in two rat models of depression
Differential brain, but not serum VEGF levels in a genetic rat model of depression
Blood BDNF concentrations reflect brain-tissue BDNF levels across species.
TLDR
Preliminary data support the view that measures of blood and plasma BDNF levels reflect brain-tissue BDNF Levels, and find a significant positive correlation between frontal cortex and hippocampalBDNF levels in mice.
Lack of an association of BDNF Val66Met polymorphism and plasma BDNF with hippocampal volume and memory
TLDR
Findings suggest that BDNF genotype and plasma BDNF may not be robust predictors for variance in hippocampal volume and memory in middle age and older adult cohorts.
Associations between Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Plasma Levels and Severity of the Illness, Recurrence and Symptoms in Depressed Patients
TLDR
It is suggested that low BDNF levels are related to both recurrence and severity of depression, as well as to symptoms typical of dysfunctions of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
Are Low Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor Levels in the Blood a Biological Marker of Suicide Risk in Psychiatric Patients? A Systematic Review
TLDR
Further evidence is required for which blood sample type to use when examining BDNF protein levels in terms of suicidal behaviour in mental illness sufferers, and more focus should be given to a potential blood BDNF threshold among patients at suicide risk.

Brain‐derived neurotrophic factor and post‐stroke depression
TLDR
This review summarizes the current knowledge of BDNF in PSD and suggests a synergistic effect may be achieved when such treatments are applied together with existing antidepressants.

TLDR
Altered brain concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) in an animal model of depression suggest that BDNF and NGF may play a role in depression and, hypothetically, different brain regional concentrations in male and female animals may be relevant to gender differences in vulnerability to depression.
