A total of 81 avirulent Tn10 insertion mutants of Salmonella typhimurium have previously been described. These mutants were selected for the inability to survive in murine macrophages. We have characterized the abilities of the most avirulent of these mutants to adhere to, invade, and replicate in both macrophages and nonphagocytic epithelial cells.
