These notes are a didactic overview of the non perturbative and background independent approach to a quantum theory of gravity known as loop quantum gravity. The definition of real connection variables for general relativity, used as a starting point in the program, is described in a simple manner. The main ideas leading to the definition of the quantum theory are naturally introduced and the basic mathematics involved is described. The main predictions of the theory such as the discovery of…

Spin Foam Models for Quantum Gravity and semi-classical limit

The spinfoam framework is a proposal for a regularized path integral for quantum gravity. Spinfoams define quantum space-time structures describing the evolution in time of the spin network states

This is a review of results on black hole physics in the context of loop quantum gravity, finding the discreteness of geometric quantities at the Planck scale predicted by this approach to quantum gravity to be key.

An Introduction to Loop Quantum Gravity with Application to Cosmology

The development of a quantum theory of gravity has been ongoing in the theoretical physics community for about 80 years, yet it remains unsolved. In this dissertation, we review the loop quantum

Loop Quantum Gravity

An overview of ideas, techniques, results and open problems of this candidate theory of quantum gravity is given, and a guide to the relevant literature is given.

ec 2 00 6 Fermions in three-dimensional spinfoam quantum gravity

We study the coupling of massive fermions to the quantum mechanical dynamics of spacetime emerging from the spinfoam approach in three dimensions. We first recall the classical theory before

Fermions in three-dimensional spinfoam quantum gravity

We study the coupling of massive fermions to the quantum mechanical dynamics of spacetime emerging from the spinfoam approach in three dimensions. We first recall the classical theory before

Spin Foams and Canonical Quantization

This review is devoted to the analysis of the mutual consistency of the spin foam and canonical loop quantizations in three and four spacetime dimensions. In the three-dimensional context, where the

A taste of Hamiltonian constraint in spin foam models

The asymptotics of some spin foam amplitudes for a quantum 4-simplex is known to display rapid oscillations whose frequency is the Regge action. In this note, we reformulate this result through a

Casting loop quantum cosmology in the spin foam paradigm

The goal of spin foam models is to provide a viable path integral formulation of quantum gravity. Because of background independence, their underlying framework has certain novel features that are

Regularization ambiguities in loop quantum gravity

One of the main achievements of loop quantum gravity is the consistent quantization of the analog of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation which is free of ultraviolet divergences. However, ambiguities

Background independent quantum gravity: A Status report

The goal of this review is to present an introduction to loop quantum gravity—a background-independent, non-perturbative approach to the problem of unification of general relativity and quantum

Recent Developments in Non-Perturbative Quantum Gravity

New results from the new variables/loop representation program of nonperturbative quantum gravity are presented, with a focus on results of Ashtekar, Rovelli and the author which greatly clarify the

Quantum Gravity as the Natural Regulator of Matter Quantum Field Theories

It is an old speculation in physics that, once the gravitational field is successfully quantized, it should serve as the natural regulator of infrared and ultraviolet singularities that plague

A finite spin-foam-based theory of three and four dimensional quantum gravity

Starting from Ooguri's construction for $BF$ theory in three (and four) dimensions, we show how to construct a well defined theory with an infinite number of degrees of freedom. The spin network

Spin Foam Models for Quantum Gravity

In this topical review, we review the present status of the spin foam formulation of non-perturbative (background-independent) quantum gravity. The topical review is divided into two parts. In the

Three-dimensional loop quantum gravity: physical scalar product and spin-foam models

In this paper, we address the problem of the dynamics in three-dimensional loop quantum gravity with zero cosmological constant. We construct a rigorous definition of Rovelli's generalized projection

Spacetime geometry from algebra: spin foam models for non-perturbative quantum gravity

This is an introduction to spin foam models for non-perturbative quantum gravity, an approach that lies at the point of convergence of many different research areas, including loop quantum gravity,

Quantum theory of geometry: I. Area operators

A new functional calculus, developed recently for a fully non-perturbative treatment of quantum gravity, is used to begin a systematic construction of a quantum theory of geometry. Regulated
