Intrinsic aberrations are those which occur due to the finite length of the desired field configuration. They are often loosely ascribed to the fringing field. This is misleading as it implies that the effects can be minimized by shaping the fields. In fact, there is an irreducible component related to the broken symmetry. It is present even in the hard-edge limit, and moreover, the other (soft-edge) effects can be simply ascribed to the intrinsic aberration spread over a finite length. We…

Deflections in magnet fringe fields.

A transverse multipole expansion is derived, including the longitudinal components necessarily present in regions of varying magnetic field profile. It can be used for exact numerical orbit following

Spherical aberration from trajectories in real and hard-edge solenoid fields

For analytical, real and hard-edge solenoidal axial magnetic fields, the low-energy electron trajectories are obtained using the third-order paraxial ray equation. Using the particle trajectories, it

OPTIMAL 3 D QUADRUPOLE SHAPES

The usual practice of constructing quadrupoles from truncated cylindrical hyperbolae is put into question. A new shape is proposed. This shape has an analytic potential function. The exact shape of

High gradient quadrupoles for low emittance storage rings

High gradient quadrupoles are key components for the coming generation of storage ring based light sources. The typical specifications of these magnets are: almost 100  T/m gradient, half a meter

TOWARDS ULTRA-LOW BETA * IN ATF 2

TheAccelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2) has already demonstrated the feasibility of Final Focus Systems based on the local chromaticity correction scheme and its focusing capabilities by reaching a

Quadrupoles, to Third Order

I derive the third order optics of quadrupoles. I transform away the derivatives of the strength function, and thus demonstrate that third order aberrations are insensitive to fringe field shaping.

Optics improvements of the K500 axial injection line

Recent improvements in the K500 injection beam line optics have increased the injection efficiency into the K500 cyclotron and lead to record primary beam powers on the production target at the CCF

TRIUMF 4004

The DRAGON separator currently under construction at TRIUMF for the ISAC project has several quadrupoles where the beam occupies up to three quarters of the magnetic aperture of the quadrupoles. It

AUTOMATING THE COMPUTATION OF QUADRUPOLE TRANSFER MAPS AND MATRICES UTILIZING ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD SOLUTIONS

An automated procedure for the calculation of particle transfer maps using computed magnetic field data has been developed for several types of magnetic quadrupoles. The Automated Transfer Map
