The objective of the study was to determine the evidence of intratympanic steroids injections (ITSI) for efficacy in the management of the following inner ear diseases: Ménière’s disease, tinnitus, noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). The data sources were literature review from 1946 to December 2014, PubMed and Medline. A systematic review of the existing literature was performed. Databases were searched for all human prospective…

Combined intratympanic and systemic use of steroids for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss: a meta-analysis
TLDR
It is reached that combination therapy exhibited better outcomes in PTA improvement than SST alone, especially in severe-profound initial hearing loss cases, and also showed advantages in recovery rate.

TLDR
The effect of intratympanic steroid treatment in Menière's disease is questionable and there is a great need for further research to sufficiently assess whether steroid treatment may be considered as a safe and effective treatment for patients with Meniere's disease.
Intratympanic corticosteroids in Ménière's disease: A mini-review
Intratympanic (IT) Therapies for Menière’s Disease: Some Consensus Among the Confusion
TLDR
IT injections of aminoglycosides and corticosteroids can improve vertigo control but hearing and vestibular loss however may result with IT aminglycosides.
Intratympanic Drug Delivery for Tinnitus Treatment
TLDR
The results suggest that both oral and injection intratympanic methylprednisolone are effective treatment for acute tinnitus associated with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss in these patients.
Effects of early intratympanic steroid injection in patients with acoustic trauma caused by gunshot noise
TLDR
The results showed additional hearing benefits with administration of ITSI, and patients with additional ITSI showed significant improvement in the degree of hearing gain compared with the PD-only group.
University of Southern Denmark Intratympanic Steroid for Menière's Disease
TLDR
The effect of intratympanic steroid treatment in Menière’s disease is questionable and there is a great need for further research to sufficiently assess whether steroid treatment may be considered as a safe and effective treatment for patients with menière's disease.
Comparison of 2 and 4 Intratympanic Steroid Injections in the Treatment of Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss
TLDR
Results indicate that a protocol using only 2 intratympanic steroid injections exerts a sufficient effect on the hearing outcomes of ISSNHL, which would be greatly beneficial to relieve the physical and mental stress of patients.

Intratympanic Steroid Injections as a Salvage Treatment for Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study
TLDR
Both the response rate and the level of hearing improvement were significantly greater in the ITSI group than in the ITNI group, demonstrating that ITSIs are beneficial as a salvage therapy for the treatment of patients with idiopathic SSHL who fail to respond to initial systemic steroid therapy.
Intratympanic and Systemic Steroids for Sudden Hearing Loss
TLDR
The addition of intratympanic steroids to the conventional systemic steroid therapy may provide a safe and potentially effective therapeutic option in patients with mild-to-severe ISSNHL.
Therapeutic Efficacy of the Combination of Intratympanic Methylprednisolone and Oral Steroid for Idiopathic Sudden Deafness
TLDR
Combination therapy showed significant hearing improvement and speech discrimination scores compared with the use of systemic steroids alone and combined with intratympanic methylprednisolone compared with oral steroid alone, recommending that combination therapy can be considered as initial treatment especially for patients with severe hearing loss.
Intratympanic Steroid Treatment in Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Control Study
Primary Observation of Early Transtympanic Steroid Injection in Patients with Delayed Treatment of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
TLDR
The outcome of this trial indicates that delayed treatment of NIHL may be preferable if transtympanic therapy can be applied earlier, and the large variability in the individual results indicates that additional carefully controlled studies with larger sample sizes are needed to understand the effect of early tran Stympanic Therapy in patients with delayed treatment with NIHL.
Dexamethasone inner ear perfusion for the treatment of Meniere's disease: a prospective, randomized, double-blind, crossover trial.
TLDR
Intratympanic administration of dexamethasone in a group of patients with unilateral Meniere's disease (Shea's stage IV) showed no benefit over placebo for the treatment of hearing loss and tinnitus.

TLDR
Intratympanic injections of gentamicin are more efficient than ITMP in controlling the symptoms of Ménière’s disease and to evaluate their effect on hearing level.
Intratympanic Treatment of Intractable Unilateral Ménière Disease
TLDR
Low-dose ITG achieved better outcome than ITD in the control of vertigo attacks in patients suffering from unilateral MD, with a very low incidence of hearing deterioration.

TLDR
Three different treatment protocols for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss resulted in similar hearing recovery rates, and OPD-based systemic and/or local steroid therapy can be recommended as an initial treatment in ISSNHL.
