Intramitochondrial crystals have been observed in sexual Hydra and in certain stages of regenerating Hydra. These unusual mitochondria are found specifically in epitheliomuscular cells. The crystals are located in the matrix of the mitochondria, are rhomboidal or rectangular, and their lattice pattern bears a strong resemblance to crystals observed in other organisms.
