Meningitis and epiglottitis are the clinical manifestations of severe Haemophilus influenzae serotype b infection. Compared with meningitis, epiglottitis occurs in older children. When secondary cases occur within the family, the type of clinical manifestation produced by this serotype is generally similar in siblings.
