Summary: Displays of intraspecific and interspecific overt agonistic behavior between colonies of Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) and colonies of Reticulitermes virginicus (Banks) were observed in laboratory assays. All possible combinations of arena sizes (1.3, 3.5, 6.0, and 9.0-cm) and group sizes (1, 2, 5 and 10 workers per arena) were assessed for effects on interspecific and intraspecific agonism. Agonistic behavior was scored positive in arenas if half or less of the starting number of… Expand

Intra- and Interspecific Agonistic Behavior of the Subterranean Termite Microcerotermes crassus (Isoptera: Termitidae)
TLDR
Investigation of the intra- and interspecific agonistic behaviors exhibited by the worker and soldier castes of the subterranean termite Microcerotermes crassus Snyder found M. crASSus was aggressive toward individuals from different species but not towardindividuals from different M. Crassus colonies. Expand
Comportamento intra-específico do cupim Heterotermes tenuis (Hagen) (Isoptera, Rhinotermitidae) em condições de laboratório
TLDR
Assays indicate that the factors governing the agonistic behavior in H. tenuis are complex and seems to be dependent on environmental conditions and individual characteristies (age, size and caste). Expand
Agonistic Interactions Between Colonies of the Formosan Subterranean Termite (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) in New Orleans, Louisiana
TLDR
Interactions between colonies of C. formosanus from the same geographic area are complex and that these interactions could influence strategies for termite control. Expand
Factors that Affect Aggression Among the Worker Caste of Reticulitermes spp. Subterranean Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae)
TLDR
There was a slight trend toward reduced aggressive behavior as termites were maintained in the laboratory for 3 months, and differences in head capsule size between passive and aggressive individuals provided no correlation between the presence of aggressiveness and theHead capsule size in the worker caste. Expand
Intraspecific colony recognition in the termites Macrotermes subhyalinus and Macrotermes bellicosus (Isoptera, Termitidae)
TLDR
Intraspecific colony recognition in the termites Macrotermes subhyalinus and M. bellicosus was investigated over two field seasons in Comoë-Nationalpark (Ivory Coast) with no indication of a dear-enemy phenomenon. Expand
Agonistic Behavior Between Individual Worker Termites from Three Cuticular Hydrocarbon Phenotypes of Reticulitermes (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) from Northern California
TLDR
Intercolonial/intraphenotype pairings paralleled group bioassays with low levels of immediate aggression; however, individual pairings had lower levels of mortality at 24 h and significant differences in immediate aggression. Expand
Testing the role of cuticular hydrocarbons on intercolonial agonism in two subterranean termite species (Coptotermes) and their hybrids
TLDR
The variable abundance of the major alkanes and methyl alkanes commonly found in most Coptotermes species does not explain agonistic patterns, and that other factors such as possibly more complex but less abundant CHC are likely to be involved in colonial recognition. Expand
Effect of arena sizes on intra- and inter-specific agonism in the termites, Microcerotermes fuscotibialis Sjostedt and M. edentatus Wasman (Termitidae: Termitinae)
TLDR
Foraging space delineated by distance may be an important factor that could reduce fatal encounters among termite species with agonistic tendencies within a given foraging area. Expand
Reproductive dynamics and colony structure of subterranean termites of the genus Reticulitermes (Isoptera Rhinotermitidae): a review of the evidence from behavioral, ecological, and genetic studies
TLDR
This work reviews and synthesizes current information on Reticulitermes life history, reproduction, and genetics to develop an understanding of colony and population structure, and possible modes of reproductive organization. Expand
Interspecific Competition and Territory Defense Mechanisms of Coptotermes formosanus and Coptotermes gestroi (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae)
TLDR
Results of two bioassays in the current study showed that C. gestroi was more aggressive than C. formosanus, and sealed individual tunnels in response to encounters with other species acts to prevent further agonism and mortality, and on a broad scale the aggregate of such blocked tunnels may come to define the borders between adjacent colonies. Intercolonial Aggression in the Subterranean Termite Heterotermes Aureus (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae)
TLDR
This study was done to examine the aggressive behavior between H. aureus colonies from different field locations and describe intercolony interactions of both paired individuals and simulated foraging groups. Expand
Suggestion of an Environmental Influence on Intercolony Agonism of Formosan Subterranean Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae)
TLDR
The role of environmental factors in the intercolonial kin recognition of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki was investigated and suggested that an environmental cue is part of a multiple component system for intercolony kin recognition in this species. Expand

Termite-Termite Interactions: Workers as an Agonistic Caste
TLDR
This paper explores intra- and interspecific agonistic encounters among termites, and focuses on the roles of workers and soldiers in such conflicts. Expand
Delineation of Heterotermes aureus (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) Foraging Territories in a Sonoran Desert Grassland
TLDR
A comparison of three techniques for delineating territorial boundaries suggested that the release and recapture of dyed termites and agonistic behavior among termites were the most reliable techniques, whereas spatial and temporal patterns of termite attack on baits were unreliable for determining boundaries.
