Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) provide important regulatory functions in the motor activity of the gastrointestinal tract. In the small intestine, ICC in the myenteric region (ICC-MY), between the circular and longitudinal muscle layers, generate and propagate electrical slow waves.
