This is the report of a consensus conference entitled “Ventilator-associated Lung Injury (VALI) in ARDS”, which was held in Toronto, Canada in October 1998. The conference was sponsored by three societies: The American Thoracic Society (ATS), the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM), and the Societé de Réanimation de Langue Française (SRLF).
