Studies were conducted to determine whether Fe uptake and transport in maize (Zea mays L.) is controlled inside or outside the root. Two maize genotypes exhibiting wide differences in Fe uptake and utilization were used. They were the Fe-efficient genotype WF9 and the Fe-inefficient genotype ys1/ys1. Iron-stressed WF9 produced higher amounts of H-ions and ‘reductant’ in nutrient solutions and reduced more Fe at the root surface than ys1/ys1.
