Summary.Galactic globular clusters, which are ancient building blocks of our Galaxy, represent a very interesting family of stellar systems in which some fundamental dynamical processes have taken place on time scales shorter than the age of the universe. In contrast with galaxies, these clusters represent unique laboratories for learning about two-body relaxation, mass segregation from equipartition of energy, stellar collisions, stellar mergers, and core collapse. In the present review, we…

Multi-Mass gaseous models of globular clusters with stellar evolution

Abstract Gaseous models have proven to be a computationally cheap and reliable tool to investigate the dynamical behaviour of globular clusters. But to compete with other approaches for modelling the

Spectroscopy of Binaries in Globular Clusters

The natural constants in the universe are adjusted so that dense and massive star forming regions can end up in gravitational bound star clusters, called globular clusters. These objects are found in

Relativistic Binaries in Globular Clusters

The theoretical models of globular cluster evolution and binary evolution, techniques for simulating this evolution which lead to relativistic binaries, and current and possible future observational evidence for this population of stars are discussed.

Globular clusters (GCs) are compact, gravitationally bound systems of up to ∼1 million stars. The GCs in the Milky Way contain some of the oldest stars known, and provide important clues to the early

The Unique History of the Globular Cluster ω Centauri

Using current observational data and simple dynamical modeling, we demonstrate that ω Cen is not special among the Galactic globular clusters in its ability to produce and retain the heavy elements

Blue Straggler Stars in Globular Clusters: A Powerful Tool to Probe the Internal Dynamical Evolution of Stellar Systems

This chapter presents an overview of the main observational results obtained to date about Blue Straggler Stars (BSSs) in Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs). The BSS specific frequency, radial

Anisotropic Mass Segregation in Rotating Globular Clusters

We investigate the internal dynamics of anisotropic, rotating globular clusters with a multimass stellar population by performing new direct N-body simulations. In addition to the well-known radial

Abundance Variations within Globular Clusters

▪ Abstract Abundance variations within globular clusters (GCs), and of GC stars with respect to field stars, are important diagnostics of a variety of physical phenomena, related to the evolution of

Relativistic Binaries in Globular Clusters

This discussion of globular cluster evolution will focus on the processes that boost the production of tight binary systems and the subsequent interaction of these binaries that can alter the properties of both bodies and can lead to exotic objects.

Multiple populations in globular clusters: the distinct kinematic imprints of different formation scenarios

Several scenarios have been proposed to explain the presence of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters. Many of them invoke multiple generations of stars to explain the observed chemical

Structure and dynamics of elliptical galaxies

The article reviews the modelling of elliptical galaxies, centred on the question of their overall mass distribution and intrinsic symmetry and also taking into account the three major issues of
