The long-term effects of high nitrogen supply on the growth and partitioning of biomass in a common sedge species, Carex rostrata Stokes, were studied in a greenhouse experiment. Special attention was paid to free amino acids and soluble sugars, representing biochemically available fractions of nitrogen and carbon, respectively, in the tissues of Carex.
