Proinflammatory cytokines have been implicated in the short- and long-term morbidity experienced by hemodialysis (HD) patients. The present study, which is based on long-term follow-up of a cohort of 37 patients, relates peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) synthesis (a reliable marker of IL-1beta synthesis in HD patients) and plasma levels of an acute phase reactant, lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP), to clinical outcomes.
