Interdisciplinary Forum: From Genetic Diagnosis to Gene Therapy in Oncology

Abstract

The International Forum: From Genetic Diagnosis to Geue Therapy in Oncology, organized by the Institute of Immunology, University Witten/Herdecke, was held on 26 Septemberl October at the Centro Cultural De Circulo De Lectores, Madrid, Spain. The guiding philosophy of this forum was to bring together scientists highly qualified in basic and clinical genetic cancer research and to seek philosophical reflections on nature and function of morality. Our objective was to show how ethical theories can illuminate problems in genetic health care and help to overcome some limitations of past, sometimes insufficient formulations of ethical responsibilities. However, it is unreasonable to expect any ethical theory, moral philosophy, or philosophical ethics to overcome all the limitations of time and place and to achieve a universally acceptable perspective. On 26 September the forum was opened by a vern i s sage where the artist Guiseppe Medagli, an Italian-born painter, was present. Artists and scientists from opposite standpoints joined in the celebration of the glory of life. The opening of the Forum merged the vision of outstanding critical investigators from different disciplines of life sciences with that of of an artist.
