ABSTRACT A population of the invasive Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) was examined over a three-year period in a mesotrophic reservoir to find out interannual variations of fecundity and egg size and the influence of maternal condition (total length, TL, and age class) and environmental factors (water temperature and fish density) on these variables. Prussian carp reproduction was synchronous, with only a single batch, and fecundity ranged from 1,250 to 62,400 eggs per female. Relative… Expand
Egg size variability in an establishing population of invasive silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Valenciennes, 1844)
TLDR
Egg size was positively correlated with both embryo total length and yolk sac volume, indicating larger silver carp eggs contain larger, better-provisioned embryos at a given developmental stage, and reproductive plasticity is likely to be key for achieving reproductive success in newly invaded ecosystems despite the species’ naivety with novel and unpredictable environmental conditions therein. Expand
Long-term growth patterns in a pond-dwelling population of crucian carp, Carassius carassius: environmental and density-related factors
TLDR
The results indicate that within a strong year class of crucian carp, the growth of individual fish is reduced compared with weak year classes, suggesting that density negatively affects growth in ponds where resources are limited. Expand
THE IMPACT OF TEMPORAL PATTERNS OF TEMPERATURE AND PRECIPITATION ON SILVER PRUSSIAN CARP (CARASSIUS GIBELIO) SPAWNING EVENTS
It was revealed that Gibel carp, Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782) spawning phenology is determined by regular patterns of variability in temperature and precipitation over the period of time afterExpand
Distribution of Invasive Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782) (Teleostei:Cyprinidae) in Turkey
TLDR
Only four basins out of 26, seems to show no distribution of Carassius gibelio, which is considered as a problem in inland waters of Turkey as it is in some countries of Europe. Expand
Growth and reproduction of a non-native fish species Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782) from Büyükçekmece Lake (İstanbul, Turkey)
TLDR
Gibel carp has become one of the most dominant fish species in the lake despite predators like Esox lucius, Linneaeus 1758, Silurus glanis Linnaeus, 1758 and also other cyprinids such as Cyprinus carpio,Linneaeus1758, Scardinius erythrophthalmus which have similar feeding regime. Expand
Development of empirical standard weight equation for Pursak chub Squalius pursakensis , an endemic cyprinid species of Northwest Anatolia
TLDR
In this research, length and weight data over the distribution range for Pursak chub Squalius pursakensis, an endemic species distributed in the Sakarya and Porsuk drainages in Northwest Anatolia (Turkey), were used to compute a Ws equation by means of the empirical percentile (EmP) method. Expand
Comparative study of growth in Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782) and Rutilus rutilus (L., 1758) from two Serbian reservoirs: Multi-model analysis and inferences
TLDR
It is assumed that differences in growth patterns observed in this study predominantly present a response to the highly differential environmental conditions from the two reservoirs. Expand
Age and Growth of Rudd, Scardinius erythophthalmus (Linnaeus, 1758), in Ömerli Reservoir (İstanbul, Turkey)
In this study, 317 rudds (Scardinius erythrophthalmus (Linnaeus, 1758) were captured between March 2005 - January  2007 from Omerli Reservoir and growth features such as age, growth and conditionExpand
Growth parameters of invasive gibel carp Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782) in Lake Marmara (Turkey)
Abstract The objective of this study was to determine growth parameters, such as age–length and length–weight relationships, as well as condition factors and sex ratio, of the Carassius gibelioExpand

Reproductive ecology of two cyprinid fishes in an oligotrophic lake near the southern limits of their distribution range
TLDR
Investigation of the reproductive activities of two dominant fish species in an oligotrophic lake in the northwest of Turkey revealed that spawning of both species in this area started earlier, but spawning temperature and the duration of spawning was approximately the same. Expand
Investigation of Some Biological Characteristics of the Silver Crucian Carp, Carassius gibelio (Bloch 1782) Population in Lake Eğirdir
TLDR
It was determined that the condition factor of both males and females increased with fish size, and the most intensive period for reproduction was from April to July, although reproduction lasted until August. Expand
The effect of size of food ration on egg production in the female three‐spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus L.
TLDR
The effect of food level on the egg production of three-spined sticklebacks was studied experimentally and weight at maturity was positively correlated with the number of spawnings, the mean number and the weight of eggs produced per spawning. Expand
Growth and feed utilization in two strains of gibel carp, Carassius auratus gibelio: paternal effects in a gynogenetic fish
TLDR
It is suggested that gibel carp 'fertilized' with sperm of common carp grew faster than those 'fERTILized'with sperm of gibelCarassius auratus gibelio Bloch through increased feed conversion efficiency and protein retention. Expand
Cost of egg production in the three‐spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.)
TLDR
In the interval between successive spawnings, female sticklebacks consumed approximately their own wet weight of Tubifex, and total production (the summation of egg production and somatic growth) was a function of the amount of food consumed. Expand
Diet of the western carp gudgeon (Hypseleotris klunzingeri Ogilby) in an Australian floodplain lake: the role of water level stability
TLDR
Community analysis revealed that diets of fish collected from the billabong following stable antecedent water levels were similar and showed little variation, while those collected following fluctuating antecedents water levels showed much more variation, which was mirrored in the volumes of individual diet components. Expand
Tales of two fish: the dichotomous biology of crucian carp (Carassius carassius (L.)) in northern Europe
TLDR
Crucian carp's unique anoxia toler ance, accompanied by many exceptional structural and functional features, and the species' suitability for laboratory studies, has recently raised crucian carp to a status of a physiological model species like its relative, the goldfish. Expand
THE LIFE‐HISTORY OF THE BULLHEAD OR MILLER'S THUMB (COTTUS GOBIO L.)
TLDR
The fish lives on the margins of lakes and in rivers under stones where there is a sandy or gravelly bottom and grows faster than females in both the river Bray and Windermere and fishes of both sexes grow faster in the lake than they do in the river. Expand
The effects of increased flow rates on linear dominance hierarchies and physiological function in brown trout, Salmo trutta
TLDR
Under constant conditions hierarchies were formed among groups of four brown trout, Salmo trutta, and the dominant fish displayed physiological advantages, but when an environmental perturbation of increased water flow was imposed, the social behaviour of the fish was altered and the physiological advantages of dominance were lost. Expand
Initial response of a floodplain lake fish community to water‐level stabilisation
TLDR
Positive responses to water stabilisation practices that may act as an intermediate step in restoring river–floodplain function in certain situations are suggested. Expand
