The mechanisms of targeting, insertion and assembly of the chloroplast-encoded thylakoid membrane proteins are unknown. In this study, we investigated these mechanisms for the chloroplast-encoded polytopic D1 thylakoid membrane protein, using a homologous translation system isolated from tobacco chloroplasts.
