}Sleep disturbances, including sleep insufficiency and sleep fragmentation, have been linked to abnormal glucose metabolism and increased diabetes risk. Well‐controlled laboratory studies have provided insights regarding the underlying mechanisms. Several large prospective studies suggest that these sleep disturbances are associated with an increased risk of incident diabetes. Obstructive sleep apnea, which combines sleep fragmentation and hypoxemia, is a major risk factor for insulin resistance…

There is a need to develop sleep promotion programs and test their effects on sleep, glucose, and related outcomes (e.g., self-care, psychological health) and support sleep interventions in improving sleep and glycemic control while diabetes technology use could potentially improve sleep.

It was found that sleep duration leads impaired glucose metabolism and that irregular sleep pattern plays role in the onset of abnormal eating behaviors by affecting glucose metabolism adversely and playing an important role inThe pathophysiology of T2DM.

It is proposed how reduced sleep during pregnancy may result in further dysfunction of the carbohydrate axis and putative mechanisms of action by which reduced sleep may adversely affect maternal and infant outcomes are discussed.

Fragmentation of sleep across all stages is associated with a decrease in S(I) and S(G), and increases in sympathetic nervous system and adrenocortical activity likely mediate the adverse metabolic effects of poor sleep quality.

Evidence is rapidly accumulating to indicate that chronic partial sleep loss may increase the risk of obesity and diabetes, and multiple epidemiologic studies have shown an association between short sleep and higher body mass index after controlling for a variety of possible confounders.

Growing data in pregnant women indicate that snoring and sleep apnea increase the risk of these and other complications for both the mother and the fetus, and direct evidence of the pathophysiologic mechanisms by which sleep-disordered breathing during pregnancy exerts negative effects remains sparse.

Sleep often seems undervalued in modern society, but this may have widespread metabolic consequences as described in this review, which suggests chronic sleep restriction ideally should not be.
