The compound eyes of decapod crustaceans are carried on the ends of stalks called eyecups. Although the eyecups are separately movable, their gross movements, except for protective retraction, appear closely linked. This linkage is well illustrated in optokinetic nystagmus, which is the response of the eyecups to movement of the visual field, usually elicited by rotation of a vertically striped drum around the animal.
