Incubation of rat erythrocytes with benoxaprofen resulted in increased glucose utilization, lactate production, depletion of cellular ATP and significant haemolysis. In isolated red cell membranes, benoxaprofen produced a dose related stimulation of both Ca2+ dependent and Ca2+ independent ATPase activities.
