We introduce inter-technology backscatter, a novel approach that transforms wireless transmissions from one technology to another, on the air. Specifically, we show for the first time that Bluetooth transmissions can be used to create Wi-Fi and ZigBee-compatible signals using backscatter communication. Since Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and ZigBee radios are widely available, this approach enables a backscatter design that works using only commodity devices. We build prototype backscatter hardware using an…

Enabling Practical Backscatter Communication for On-body Sensors
TLDR
Frequency-shifted backscatter is practical in typical mobile and static on-body sensing scenarios while only using commodity radios and antennas and can also leverage multiple radios typically present on mobile and wearable devices to construct multi-carrier or multi-receiver scenarios to improve robustness.
Enabling Multi-Channel Backscatter Communication for Bluetooth Low Energy
TLDR
This paper presents the first multichannel backscatter tag design and builds a prototype of the tag using an FPGA and evaluates it with BLE devices, showing that the tag can back scatter BLE signals in a channel-hopping manner, which can be decoded by standard BLE Devices.
Exploiting Residual Channel for Implicit Wi-Fi Backscatter Networks
TLDR
A flicker detector is proposed that achieves per-symbol in-band backscatter by exploiting residual channel of Wi-Fi packets and shows robust performance without any modification on the hardware and any side effect on wireless channels.
Protocol-Aware Backscatter Communication Using Commodity Radios
TLDR
Comprehensive field studies show that the backscatter can identify four protocols at an average identification accuracy of about 90 % and it is demonstrated that the identification is compatible with different back scatter modulation for all four signals in 2.4GHz band.
X-Tandem: Towards Multi-hop Backscatter Communication with Commodity WiFi
TLDR
For the first time, it is demonstrated that sensing tags can not only work as relays for each other but also modulate their sensing data into a single backscatter packet, which remains a legit WiFi packet that can be decoded with any commercial WiFi NICs.
Experimental Evaluation on IEEE 802.15.4 Compatible Backscatter
TLDR
It is demonstrated that the proposed backscatter scheme can realize IEEE 802.15.4 packet transmissions with low power at a certain angle and communication distance and frequency hopping at the RF signal generator can increase the number of the received packets.
Channel Independent Wi-Fi Backscatter Networks
TLDR
This work designs a backscatter receiver accepting Wi-Fi frames on the listening channel as well as adjacent channels, and proposes a method that translates the error vectors of each subcarrier into a back scatter frame.
WiTAG: Seamless WiFi Backscatter Communication
TLDR
WiTAG is designed to send data by selectively interfering with subframes (MPDUs) in an aggregated frame (A-MPDU) which enables standard compliant communication using modern, open or encrypted 802.11n and802.11ac networks without requiring hardware or software modifications to any devices.
WiTAG: Rethinking Backscatter Communication for WiFi Networks
TLDR
This paper designs tags which can selectively interfere with subframes (MPDUs) in an aggregated frame (A-MPDU) which enables standard compliant communication using modern 802.11n and802.11ac networks with minimal infrastructure and without requiring hardware or software modifications to any devices.
FM Backscatter: Enabling Connected Cities and Smart Fabrics
TLDR
This paper enables connectivity on everyday objects by transforming them into FM radio stations by using a modulation technique that transforms backscatter, which is a multiplication operation on RF signals, into an addition operation on the audio signals output by FM receivers.
