Long persistence of allelic lineages, prevalence of nonsynonymous over synonymous substitutions in the peptide-binding region (PBR), and deviation from neutrality of the expected gene identity parameter F all indicate indirectly that balancing selection is operating at functional major histocompatibility complex (MHC) loci.
