This article covers a methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of cleaning two Russian icons. The icons belong to a group of five from the same iconographic school, dating from the 16th to 17th centuries. An integrated and complementary approach to varnish and overpaint removal involved microscopic techniques (optical and scanning electron microscopy) and colorimetry (CIE L*a*b* system). The materials and techniques used in these icons have been characterized previously. Cleaning revealed…
Assessment of cleaning effectiveness for new ecological systems on ancient tempera icon by complementary microscopy techniques
The study presents an old icon painted in egg tempera on lime wood, with a poor conservation condition and clogged dirt deposits. The icon is attributed to an anonymous painter of XIXth century and

Ethiopian icons played an important role in Ethiopian arts in the period between mid-fifteenth centuries and the twentieth century. The religious ties between Egypt and Abyssinia witnessed a
INTEGRATED ANALYTICAL STUDY FOR THE EVALUATION OF CLEANING EFFECTIVENESS ON OLD WOOD ROMANIAN ICONS
This paper presents the evaluation of cleaning effectiveness on old wood Romanian Crucible. The old Orthodox Crucible is from a private collection, that has been cleaned long ago, and recently had a
New Ecological Solutions Involved in the Cleaning of a 19th Century Icon
Cleaning of old icons requires special attention to selecting the processes and systems compatible with the chemical nature and adhesions of the deposits, to not affect the polychrome layer or their
NEW RESEARCH ON MATERIALS USED IN THE PAINTING OF ICONS ON GLASS IN TRANSYLVANIA IN THE XIX CENTURY
In Transylvania, glass icon is, by excellence, the art of peasants’ artists. The painting of icons on glass has used the following types of materials: glass as support, pigments and dyes, organic
Ancient ‘gilded’ art objects from European cultural heritage: a review on different scales of characterization
This paper is a review on the studies performed through imaging and spectroscopy-based analytical methods on ancient ‘gilded’ art-objects (9th–19th centuries) from the European cultural heritage.
Cross-Section and Staining-Based Techniques for Investigating Organic Materials in Painted and Polychrome Works of Art: A Review
TLDR
A few case studies were selected to illustrate the use of autofluorescence (intrinsic fluorescence) and induced fluorescence (using specific staining tests and fluorophore-labeled antibodies) for mapping and identifying organic paint materials in cross sections.
ULTRA CLOSE-RANGE PHOTOGRAMMETRY TO ASSESS THE ROUGHNESS OF THE WALL PAINTING SURFACES AFTER CLEANING TREATMENTS
In the present work authors show the results obtained by means of the application of ultra closerange photogrammetry for assessing the pattern of a detached wall painting’s surface during/after
A PROCEDURE FOR COMBINING THE REMOVAL AND THE IDENTIFICATION OF A PATINA ON A 15 TH CENTURY BYZANTINE ICON
TLDR
A workflow, which combines cleaning procedures and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry for the removal and the identification of a patina from a byzantine 15 century icon representing the Virgin and Child is reported.

Integrated analytical study for the authentication of five Russian icons (XVI–XVII centuries)
TLDR
The first experimental data concerning the identification of the authentication characteristics of five Russian icons are presented, being part of a large project that has as its final aim the evaluation of the effectiveness and effects of the cleaning agent on the paint layers.
Characterisation of the varnish-object interface using white light confocal profilometry
An ongoing concern of conservators when restoring paintings and polychrome objects is the possibility of irreversible damage to the original paint layers. This is the case when removal and
GC-MS and SEM studies on the effects of solvent cleaning on old master paintings from the National Gallery, London
AbstractThis paper adopts a new approach to cleaning research, made possible by recent developments in sample derivatization. For the first time, an extensive analytical study has been made of the
