The data management in the various components of CIM systems is still realized by individual databases where communication between the components is established via interfaces such as STEP. More efficiency, however, is achieved by an integrated approach which is based on an objectoriented database system. This would allow an integrated data management that avoids data re undancy and inconsistencies, and supports all kind of complex structured data. In this talk the requirements for an…

TLDR
The metalevel concepts for an object-oriented database model are presented and possible scheme level operations, the representation of methods and their implementation as a special kind of meta information, and a simple extension to the query algebra of the underlying object- oriented database system that allow users to query objects and metaobjects within a single algebra expression are described.

An essential issue in engineering applications such as CAD or, more general, CIM is a powerful representation model that allows adequate modeling of objects those systems have to deal with.
