It is generally accepted that the prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) is the stimulator of ecdysteroidogenesis by prothoracic glands in larval insects. In the present study, we investigated activation of ecdysteroidogenesis by bovine insulin in prothoracic glands of the silkworm, Bombyx mori. The results showed that the insulin stimulated ecdysteroidogenesis during a long-term incubation period and in a dose-dependent manner.
