Impaired insulin secretion is characteristic of Diabetes Mellitus and is responsible for many of the metabolic abnormalities associated with this group of diseases. Nevertheless, the relationship of noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) to impaired islet function has been questioned ever since it was shown that the absolute levels of plasma insulin were often normal, or even elevated (1).
