PurposeChronic inflammation in the setting of inflammatory bowel disease is thought to result in altered epithelial cell growth regulation and ultimately carcinogenesis. This loss in cell growth regulation may be partially caused by a decrease in circulating intact insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IFGB-3) as a result of chronic inflammation.
