A mathematical model of the pressure-flow relationship in the arterial circulation and its possible use in routine hemodynamics in man are described. The instantaneous blood flow velocity in the ascending aorta can be calculated from two pressure curves simultaneously recorded 5 cm apart. The mechanical aortic input impedance is computed from the recorded pressure and the calculated blood flow velocity curves.
