Stomach contents were analysed from three species of beaked whales which mass-stranded shortly after a naval exercise conducted in the Canary Islands in September 2002. Animals from such mass strandings often contain freshly ingested food in their stomachs and can provide a more reliable guide to feeding habits than other strandings. Food remains recovered from seven Cuvier's beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) consisted mainly of oceanic cephalopods, the most numerous being Taonius pavo…
Stomach contents of cetaceans stranded in the Canary Islands 1996–2006
TLDR
Most of the prey species identified are not of commercial interest but one of the sperm whales contained a fishing hook among the stomach contents, with big plastic items being taken by deep diving teuthophagous whales.

Diet of mid-Atlantic Sowerby's beaked whales Mesoplondon bidens
Diet of Cuvier’s beaked whales Ziphius cavirostris from the North Pacific and a comparison with their diet world-wide
TLDR
Cuvier's beaked whales Ziphius cavirostris are distributed world-wide and are recognized as vulnerable to anthropogenic noise, and Histioteuthidae and Cranchiidae are most important in the North Atlantic.
First records of Cuvier’s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris, G. Cuvier 1823) strandings along the Tunisian coast
The Cuvier’s beaked whale ( Ziphius cavirostris ) is the only member of the Ziphiidae family with a regular occurrence in the Mediterranean Sea. Much of the knowledge of this species in the
Stomach Contents of a Cuvier's Beaked Whale (Ziphius cavirostris) Stranded in Monterey Bay, California
TLDR
The known diet of Z. cavirostris is based on prey remains recovered from only 45 individuals world-wide; diets consisted of 46 cephalopod species (15 families), infrequent crustacean remains, and rare representation among mostly unidentified fishes (MacLeod and others 2003).
Uncommon pelagic and deep-sea cephalopods in the Mediterranean: new data and literature review
TLDR
Eleven uncommon pelagic and deep-sea cephalopod species inhabiting preferentially mesopelagic and bathypelagic waters are investigated, including the first record of T. pavo in the Mediterranean.
First sightings of living Cuvier´s beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) in Albanian waters
The only published record of any beaked whale in Albanian waters is of a Cuvier’s beaked whale stranded dead in October 1975. Sightings in neighbouring Greek waters are concentrated in the Hellenic
An Acoustic Survey of Beaked Whales and Kogia spp. in the Mariana Archipelago Using Drifting Recorders
The distribution, abundance, and habitat of cryptic cetacean species such as beaked whales and dwarf/pygmy sperm whales (Kogia spp.) are challenging to study due to their long dive times and/or very

Feeding ecology of Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris): a review with new information on the diet of this species
TLDR
The range of species found in the diet of Z. cavirostris is greater than that reported for sperm whales and bottlenosed whales in the north-east Atlantic.
Review of Data on Diets of Beaked Whales: Evidence of Niche Separation and Geographic Segregation
TLDR
Stomach samples of three beaked whale genera primarily contained cephalopod and fish remains, although some also contained crustaceans, which suggests that Mesoplodon occupies a separate dietary niche from Hyperoodon and Ziphius, which may be an example of niche segregation.
Monthly variation in the diet of harbour seals in inshore waters along the southeast Shetland (UK) coastline
TLDR
A comparison of the utility of using only Otoliths to estimate seal diet with all identifiable structures showed that using otoliths alone underestimated the contribution of pelagic fish and overestimated the importance of gadids and sandeels.

TLDR
This study is based on the large, mostly unreported collections of histioteuthids that have accumulated since the family was first revised by Voss in 1969 and recognizes 13 species of the family Histiotesuthidae in a single genus.

TLDR
The stomach contents of two Cuvier's beaked whales stranded on the western Mediterranean coast were analysed and showed the character of this teuthophagous diet agrees with the offshore and deep diving behaviour of Z. cavirostris.
“Gas and Fat Embolic Syndrome” Involving a Mass Stranding of Beaked Whales (Family Ziphiidae) Exposed to Anthropogenic Sonar Signals
TLDR
The present study demonstrates a new pathologic entity in cetaceans, apparently induced by exposure to mid-frequency sonar signals and particularly affects deep, long-duration, repetitive-diving species like BWs.
