Two papers in this issue provide new information concerning the factors that contribute to and the mechanisms that underlie the development of opioid tolerance. In the first study (Mao et al. 1995), the authors addressed the efficacy of morphine in a rat model of neuropathic pain, namely the Bennett and Xie (1988) sciatic nerve constriction injury model.
