We report relaxation dynamics of glycerol-water mixtures as probed by megahertz-to-terahertz dielectric spectroscopy in a frequency range from 50 MHz to 0.5 THz at room temperature. The dielectric relaxation spectra reveal several polarization processes at the molecular level with different time constants and dielectric strengths, providing an understanding of the hydrogen-bonding network in glycerol-water mixtures. We have determined the structure of hydration shells around glycerol molecules…

Hydrogen Bonding and the Structural Properties of Glycerol-Water Mixtures with a Microwave Field: a Molecular Dynamics Study.

The results indicate that with the assistance of the microwave field, glycerol molecules become concentrated and are more likely to establish stable interactions with others.

Probing Adaptation of Hydration and Protein Dynamics to Temperature

Protein dynamics is strongly influenced by the surrounding environment and physiological conditions. Here we employ broadband megahertz-to-terahertz spectroscopy to explore the dynamics of water and…

Long-Range DNA-Water Interactions.

A Direct Probe of the Hydrogen Bond Network in Aqueous Glycerol Aerosols.

It is shown that water suppresses glycerol evaporation up to a critical mixing ratio, and this microscopic view of hydrogen bonding networks holds promise in probingEvaporation, diffusion dynamics, and reactivity in aqueous aerosols.

On Protein Preferential Solvation in Water:Glycerol Mixtures.

Preerential solvation of a series of proteins in water-glycerol mixtures is studied over a broad range of solvent compositions via classical molecular dynamics simulations to understand protein activity and cryopreservation in mixed aqueous solvents.

Dielectric relaxation of deep eutectic solvent + water mixtures: structural implications and application to microwave heating.

The analysis of the obtained relaxation amplitudes suggests that the studied systems can be viewed as mixtures of individual choline, HBD and water dipoles without pronounced dipole-dipole correlations and negligible ChCl ion pairs, which supports the suggestion of a structural transition from homogeneous electrolyte solution to a micro-heterogeneous mixture.

Unraveling the Influence of Osmolytes on Water Hydrogen-Bond Network: From Local Structure to Graph Theory Analysis

The observation of minimal variation in the local structure and the vitality of osmolyte-water hydrogen bonds on the solution network properties clearly imply that the direct interaction between protein and o smolytes is solely responsible for the protein stability.

Hydrogen bonding and the cryoprotective properties of glycerol/water mixtures.

The ability of Glycerol/water mixtures to inhibit ice crystallization is linked to the concentration of glycerol and the hydrogen bonding patterns formed by these solutions, which mimic the strong hydrogen bonding pattern seen in ice, yet crystallization does not occur.

New Insights into the Dynamics of Zwitterionic Micelles and Their Hydration Waters by Gigahertz-to-Terahertz Dielectric Spectroscopy.

The dielectric response of DPC micelles at terahertz frequencies yields, for the first time, experimental information regarding the largest scale, lowest frequency collective motions in micells.

High-Precision Megahertz-to-Terahertz Dielectric Spectroscopy of Protein Collective Motions and Hydration Dynamics.

High-precision measurements of the number of hydration water molecules indicate that the dynamical influence of proteins extends beyond the first solvation layer, to around 7 Γ… distance from the protein surface, with the largest slowdown arising from water molecules directly hydrogen-bonded to the protein.

Relaxation dynamics in glycerol-water mixtures. 2. Mesoscopic feature in water rich mixtures.

In the studied temperature range for water-rich glycerol mixtures, the two states of water are observed in addition to water in the mesoscopic 40 mol % Glycerol-water domains, and the possible kinetics of water exchange between different water states is discussed.

Relaxation dynamics in glycerol-water mixtures: I. Glycerol-rich mixtures.

The experimental results obtained for the glycerol-rich mixtures suggest that the main dielectric relaxation process, as well as the so-called high-frequency "excess wing" (EW) and dc conductivity, follow the same temperature dependence.

Molecular dynamics simulation study of glycerol-water liquid mixtures.

To study the effects of water on conformational dynamics of polyalcohols, Molecular Dynamics simulations of glycerol-water liquid mixtures have been carried out at different concentrations and it is found that the surrounding water molecules have a large impact on the populations of the Glycerol conformers.

Liquid structure of the urea-water system studied by dielectric spectroscopy.

The present work supports the argument that urea molecules can easily replace near-neighbor water in the hydrogen-bonding network and do not require the presence of the disordered phase of water to dissolve into water.

Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy of lysozyme aqueous solutions: analysis of the Ξ΄-dispersion and the contribution of the hydration water.

In the concentration range investigated, the existence of a three-modal Ξ΄-dispersion, as recently suggested, is not supported, by the analysis of the dielectric relaxations performed and a bimodal dispersion is accurate enough to describe the experimental data.

Dynamical and orientational structural crossovers in low-temperature glycerol.

It is suggested that all observed crossovers are dynamic in character because a significant and discontinuous increase in the orientational Kirkwood factor and in the dielectric constant is observed in the same range of temperatures.
